Transport for London estimates that more than 75,000 vehicles are non compliant with the tighter phase Euro 4 LEZ requirements coming into force from 3 January 2012.

Famed for its export business, Britcom International, based in Market Weighton, also has a flourishing domestic business (CM 7 July). Used sales, chassis engineering, and the bodyshop area all trained to meet export demands as much as domestic needs, and the converter role is another string to the company’s bow.

Brent Carmichael, Operations Manager, says having MAN converter status means that the company can offer customers a full range of services with the full backing of the manufacturer and its warranties.

“This means that if we require any technical assistance we can contact the technical departments in either the UK or Germany and get an immediate response. Coupled with the fact that we now apply for and download our own data files for the converted vehicles, this means that we can speed up the time from a vehicle coming on site to going on the road, having been converted, bodies and painted all under one roof. This is very important for a dealer who will start to pay for a vehicle once they have taken possession of it from the factory”, he says.

Becoming approved meant incorporating chassis engineering, body and trailer building, including associated design, into its scope of BS EN ISO 9001:2008.

“It took us a year from our submission to certification,” Carmichael explains

PROPOSAL
Britcom worked with the audit team of Munich and Swindon to analyse its ISO systems and procedures before proposing a vehicle conversion taht included all the elements of a conversion such as chassis alteration, wheel formula change, and changing a tractor into a rigid.

“When our design had been accepted by Munich, we then had to carry out the works as planned. Once completed, the audit team returned to inspect the vehicle, again over a three-day period, before compiling a dossier and recommending Britcom to become an approved converter,” he says.

In the 12 months since the appointment, Britcom has converted more than 20 chassis for both domestic and international markets and directly employed 20 people for the process. “Whether working on a chassis for the UK or exprot market we work to the same standard.

A project that we have developed for the export market is converting a 4×2 tractor to a 6×2 tag-lift specification.

“The big difference, with this being for the export market, is that we are going backwards with technology and removing the air suspension from the drive axle and replacing it with multi-leaf springs to match the added tag axle. This is a fantastic set up for the African markets due to the poor road infrastructures as it gives excellent vehicle handling and yet sill allows the tag axle to lift 150mm from the ground when needed,” he says.

Customer orders tend to be for bespoke applications but Britcom is also working on an order for six 6×2 tractors to be converted to 6×2 drawbar specification – the biggest single order to date.

“To a certain degree orders are driven by the demands of the customer, but we are carrying out conversions for our own sales departmetn, plugging the hole in the market place for things such as low mileage 26-tonne rigids,” Carmichael says.

From prepping a vehicle to delivery conversion work can take two days for a wheelbase extension, while an artic to rigid with an added axle followed by the addition of a complex body and painting can take two months.

“The conversion process for any vehicle being done for the manufacturer requires us to carry out the work as dictated by them to the letter of the law to ensure that the vehicle, once converted, can be warranted by the manufcturer to that of a standard vehicle,” he says. “This includes using the correct grades of steel, manufacturer’s fittings and extending electrics with genuine extension harnesses, to name but a few.”

DATA FILE
When a truck is finished, Britcom then has to obtain a new data file from the manufacturer and download it to the vehicle to configure the new vehicle parameters.

“Confirmation of this, along with supporting documentation, is then submitted to the VOSA technical department for approval. An appointment for inspection and, if required, the re-plating of the vehicle,” Carmichael says.

The work done by Britcom carries the full manufacturer’s warranty on a new chassis or the remainder, if the truck is still within the warranty period.

On a used truck, Britcom offers a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

A selection of Cat mini hydraulic excavators, skidsteers and telehandlers were on display for our visitors to have a good look around and get to know the equipment close up.

The day enabled us to kick off the exciting new Cat Compact dealership with both Finning Cat and Caterpillar UK visitors attending to help support the launch.

The Operator’s Challenge consisted of a mini excavator strategically surrounded by a selection of cones at different heights with different sized balls on. The challenge was to knock all the balls off all the cones the fastest, without touching the cones. The winner won a pair of Cat boots and a Cat tshirt.

Based in Market Weighton, near York, you will form part of our highly motivated sales team and your responsibilities in the designated market will include…

• The marketing and sales of Trucks, Plant Equipment and Spare Parts

• Ensuring regular contact with the customer database, including overseas travel

• Managing the procurement of spare parts and ensuring that delivery deadlines are met, in conjunction with our existing parts department team

The Candidate

• Mechanical experience essential, ideally in a commercial vehicle, plant, agricultural or spare parts environment

• Previous capital equipment sales experience desirable

• An ability to think strategically and balance the commercial needs of a thriving organisation with those of its customers in the longer-term

• Outgoing and confident personality

Lucy was born in North Yorkshire and has come back to her roots.

She has been managing a hotel in Whitby for the past 8 months, since graduating from the University of Sheffield with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Business Management.

In her spare time, Lucy enjoys athletics and swimming. She also enjoys travelling to new places and meeting new people.

Lucy says ‘I am looking forward to the new challenge of working within an International company where I will get to meet and liaise with people from many different countries and varying cultures.’

Today, Britcom International is a highly successful global exporter of commercial vehicles and plant equipment, based at purpose built facilities in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire with a Group turnover in excess of £30 Million.

Britcom International was the brainchild of the late Ray Urwin. Back then the truck export business was run from the old petrol station at Woodside near Market Weighton, with Ray’s father having converted the old fruit shop there into offices.  As with any fledgling business, it was a struggle to begin with, but gradually through tremendous hard work and dedication, Britcom International started to grow and export sales blossomed in markets such as the Far East, Caribbean, Cyprus and Africa.

Several key staff came on board during this time; Paul Mercer was one of them, and was instrumental in working alongside Ray to develop the business into what it is today.  He continues providing that drive in his current capacity of Joint Managing Director.

Within a short space of time Britcom International outgrew its premises at Woodside and relocated to larger premises at Sancton Road, Market Weighton.  This marked the next step in the development of the company, allowing the business to move into other areas, such as parts and plant equipment sales.  The purchase of a local vehicle engineering business followed in 1992.

In 1996 Ray’s son, Chris joined the business initially to assist in the expansion of the plant equipment division.  Today, Chris, now the principal shareholder, shares the leadership role with Paul as the other Joint Managing Director.

In the years that followed Britcom International went from strength to strength, adding a business in Kenya to the group. Once again, continued expansion meant the need for bigger and better premises.

In July 2006 the very impressive purpose built 14 acre site was opened, where it now offers both export and UK truck and plant equipment sales, a 6 bay chassis engineering workshop, 7 bay service workshop, a body & paint shop and parts sales.

Chris said “We’ve always striven to remain at the forefront of our business to ensure our customers remain at the forefront of theirs.  I don’t think there is a more appropriate indication of this than the growth we have achieved in the last 30 years.”

Paul added “The current premises show how far we’ve come in 30 years. Since the move 5 years ago we have significantly expanded the UK side of the business, in terms of vehicle engineering and body shop services.  It is our intention to continue to develop and grow our business around the world.“

Britcom now employs nearly 100 employees within the group and continues to grow and develop markets at home and around the world.
