East Riding Council - Gritters
Prior to the start of the 'Road Gritting Season', which is officially from 1st October to 31st March, all East Riding Council gritters are subjected to a refurbishment programme.
The refurbishment includes a thorough inspection and full meachanical service at East Riding's own maintenance unit in Beverley.
This year Britcom International were asked to quote for the bodywork refurbishment and we are delighted to say we were successful.
The objective was to thoroughly protect moving parts and the underside of the vehicles to aid on-going mechanical maintenance, and to tidy up the appearance of each vehicle.
The fleet of gritters was inspected at 3 locations and a menu price of options was produced and presented to ERYC, depending on the age and condition of each vehicle.
The first of the gritters arrived with us in August and the work programme as agreed with EYRC was implemented. The programme includes shotblasting and painting road wheels, partial shotblasting and painting of chassis, shotblasting and painting of sideguards and other removable components.
The chassis is painted with a 2-pack epoxy anti corrosion primer followed by a 2-pack epoxy black top coat; this is low-baked in our paintshop for several hours before being coated with an anti-chip coating on the outside and waxoyl on the inside and over all the joints and connections. 
All visible corrosion is removed from the spinner and body components and this in turn is protected with anti corrosion primer and overcoated with yellow top coat.
Finally the hopper, body and spinner are overcoated with a clear protective film to further prevent chipping and aid washing.
Correct pre paint preparation, including steamcleaning, shotblasting and mechanical abrasion is vital on this project to minimise the ultra corrosive effect wet salt has on the road gritter vehicles.
