Quantock Caravans

Back in 2002 we were asked by Anthony Clarke of Quantock Caravan Services if we could design a rigid caravan transporter which would allow them to transport a 40ft static caravan.

The brief was that the vehicle had to be as low as possible, could carry as much weight as possible and would fully support the whole caravan whilst in transit.

Old Quantoch 2002We duly designed the vehicle as requested and in 2010, Anthony came back to us asking us to manufacture another caravan transporter to the exact same specification.  The existing vehicle has been in constant service since 2002 and it was reported by Anthony that they have ’never even put a spanner on it or even had to change the hydraulic oil’.

The new vehicle a Scania R114 was supplied to us as a 4x2 chassis cab.  The wheelbase was extended by us and a single wheeled tag lift axle fitted.  The conversion was done whilst keeping the vehicle within the stringent requirements of the turning circle laws.  The vehicle has been re-plated to 23,000kg GVW and with a VBG drawbar coupling fitted it now has a GTW of 40,000kg.quantock cnew 2010

The caravan body was manufactured as low as possible on the chassis and has an extending rear floor section which is operated hydraulically and allows the body to be extended by an additional 1.5 metres whilst retaining the lights and markings at the very rear of the load. quantoch rear

The design is such that the caravan can be blocked and secured fully to the extension.  The rear floor when extended is also used as a vital loading aid.  When used in conjunction with the air suspension on both the front and rear axles, such a low approach angle is achieved, that only short loading ramps are required, which also aids safety when loading/unloading.

To allow for all of the usual items required when transporting caravans, tool lockers where manufactured and fitted with roller shutter doors.  This allows the lockers to be left open when working around the vehicle without fear of falling over an open locker door which is often the case.

quantoch winchA radio controlled hydraulic winch was fitted as far into the front of the body as possible and under the cab to help protect it from potential damage from caravans.  This was also helped by the additional storage compartments which were manufactured in to the front headboard.

To finish, the whole vehicle was shotblasted, primed and gloss painted with two-pack paint, in the eye catching livery of Quantock Caravan Services.

We wish Anthony luck with his new truck and look forward to welcoming him back in another 8 years to manufacture what will be his third Britcom Caravan Transporter.
