Macleods Caravans
We were approached by Macleods Caravan Transport from Scotland with a brief to supply a complete caravan transporter vehicle which would help them with a particular problem they encounter in their Caravan Transportation business.
The Problems
1. Year on year caravans are becoming wider, heavier and taller and are therefore making them all but impossible to transport on anything but a specialist piece of equipment.
2. Operating in the North of Scotland during the winter months, the vehicle can often get bogged down on particularly soft ground when loading/unloading requiring the vehicle to be towed out.
The Brief
Following several consultations, our brief was to manufacture a solo-rigid caravan transporter which would allow the longest and heaviest caravans to be transported directly to site and positioned accordingly.
This must be done on a vehicle with the shortest possible rear overhang to enxure the correct axle loadings and ease of menoevrability.
The vehicle should also be designed in such a way that would allow it to free itself should it become bogged down in soft ground.
Our Solution
A Renault Premium was taken and converted to a 6x2 rigid specification with the longest possible wheelbase and a tag lift axle fitted.
A heavy duty caravan transporter body was manufactured with a hydraulically extendable rear body section which would allow the body to be extended by 1.5m giving full support to the caravan being carried.
To alleviate the problem of being bogged down, hydraulic stabiliser legs were fitted behid the cab and at the rear of the chassis allowing the full vehicle to be raised from the ground should it get bogged down thus allowing traction aids to be placed under the vehicle wheels.
