Company History
Britcom was started in 1981 by our late Chairman, Ray Urwin, as an exporter of used commercial vehicles, initially specialising in the Far Eastern, Cypriot and Maltese markets. The company expanded rapidly, adding new customers in the Caribbean, Africa and the UK, and moved in 1987 to larger premises with it’s own workshop and paintshop allowing all refurbishment of trucks to be carried out in-house, and the creation of a spare parts department.
Diversification occurred in the early 1990’s with the move into construction plant equipment and the acquisition of a chassis engineering business with a strong UK retail customer-base, which later became our current vehicle engineering department.
Throughout the 1990’s Britcom continued to develop it’s global reputation for supplying quality equipment, with unrivalled after-sales support both in documentation and parts. Salesmen spent many weeks overseas each year visiting customers and building up those vital relationships of trust.
Space at the existing premises was increasingly at a premium so the decision was taken to purchase a new 14-acre site, still in the town of Market Weighton. This development finally came to fruition in July 2006 when the whole business relocated to new state-of-the art offices, workshops and paintshop with a yard allowing storage of over 300 vehicles. The move has taken the business onto the next level, allowing the development of many new projects you will have seen on this web site such as the Wacker Neuson and Effer franchises.
Outside of the UK, we continue to look for investment opportunities, such as the purchase in 2003 of HVPS in Kenya who are the local Renault truck dealers and have also just been appointed an MAN Top Used Dealer for Kenya.
We have now reached the stage where we employ over 80 people in the group and look forward to many more exciting developments over the coming years.
